As, the 3rd installment of the Fantastic Beasts series has been delayed by Warner Bros. I felt it would be appropriate to look back on the first two films out of the five planned. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Theme was released in November 2016. Fantastic Beasts and The Crimes of Grindelwald was released in November 2018. Both films combined have made $1.4 Billion and I will break it down later in the Box Office Records.

Fantastic Beasts is different

For all the original Potterhead’s that grew up with the Harry Potter series since 1997 were definitely enthusiastic when Warner Bros. and J. K Rowling announced the spin-off back in March 2014 through The New York Times.

It was thrilling being able to read news on how the Wizarding World would continue after the Harry Potter film series ended in July 2011.

Truth be told I was a little nervous as a fan because expectations were very high. When the first trailer was released I felt I should give it a chance and I am happy I did.

Fantastic Beasts is indeed different from the Harry Potter series and it was refreshing to see that different side of the Wizdaring World.

The era was set 70 years before Harry Potter was born. This story is about the famous writer Newt Scamander who set his own adventures in New York’s Secret Community of Witches and Wizards.

I loved that they were finally going to showcase the United States in this series. This was only the beginning to as Warner Bros. plans on filming five movies total.

Some of my favorites from the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the opening soundtrack, newspapers, era of the 1920s, Newt’s Suitcase, Creatures animated in the film, introduction of the American Ministry of Magic, the Evil Grindelwald before the time of Voldemort and the Bakery.

Critics vs The Potterhead’s

There comes moments when critics and fans are not on the same page. This is one of those moments. From reading critical reviews it seems critics did not enjoy the two films like the fans did.

The reviews for Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them were not too savage by the critics. As I researched the common websites that people look forward to were IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Common Sense Media, Google, and Metacritic to name a few.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald received more harshly towards the critics from these same websites. Giving scores such as 6.6 out of 10 from IMDB, 37% from Rotten Tomatoes, and 52% from Metacritics.

It felt unfair criticism in my eyes as a fan and many others agreed. This is why there is a divide between critics and fans around the world.

The Negative Controversies of Fantastic Beasts

While I will get go into a great detail of the negative controversies that have been covered by other media outlets I do want to speak about some issues that mostly plagued Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Some issues according to the media are mispronunciation of Grindelwald’s name, racism towards the character Nagini, Johnny Depp’s casting in the film and Dumbledore’s sexuality.

Many will agree and disagree when it comes to controversies in films. What I do dislike is a platform like Twitter being considered news worthy these days by journalists. Picking and choosing a few negative comments out of thousands of positive to make it seem like a bigger issue than it really is.

I understand I am just a small time blog writer out of thousands of others in the internet universe but I know as a fan even my voice means a little something.

The Future of Fantastic Beasts

The third installment of the film has been officially delayed by Warner Bros. I was not surprised by their actions considering the beating Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald took. Their official press release was it was to take extra time to writer a better script and storyline for fans.

In a way I can understand this situation. As someone whose loved film since a very young age I always enjoy watching films that are well thought out and put together. We do after all pay good money even more now to watch these films at theaters.

Fantastic Beasts 3 which is at the moment un-named has been given the release date of November 2021. Production for the film will begin in Spring 2020 set forth in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It will be exciting to read what future news in the coming months next year.
